Music Ideas

The examples of tape manipulation from class reminded me of two different groups I have been listening to. One is called 'Bass Communion' which is classified as drone music. It is very dark and full of very interesting sounds. The artist says "Most of [his] pieces are experiments in texture made from processing recordings of real instruments and field recordings." This is definitely one of my biggest influences in the electronic music genre. It is very different from what most people thing of as 'electronic' since it is not techno or dance music.

The other band I was thinking of is called 'Parachutes' which is a lot more accessible since it has vocals. The music is melodic, yet throughout the songs, there are everyday sounds in the background. This band is also very different from Bass Communion since all the sounds are produced live, or at least a majority of them. Bass Communion is a one man project while Parachutes is a full band.

There are two other heavier rock bands I know, that utilize synths and electronic "music. One of them is 4 piece metal band from Britain called 'Enter Shikari', who play live over programmed tracks. It is a full band with drums, guitar, bass, and vocals. The vocalist does the programming and will trigger them with his synth during live performances.

The last band is called "I Set My Friends On Fire". They are again a metal/hardcore band with programming but they do not have a full backing band. One kid does vocals and the other does all the programming of drums and synths and plays guitar. During lives performances they will use a recording of the synths and drums, and sing and play guitar over it.

Lastly, I have a friend who play in a band who uses lots of electronic music. They are called 'Math the Band'. He also sings and plays guitar over his recorded tracks. This is a lot more poppy than than the other bands.
